With a reflex light barrier, the transmitter and receiver are housed in a single enclosure, where a focused pulsed light beam is emitted via a polarising filter on to a remote reflector. The reflected light beam returns back to the sensor, where it passes a second polarising filter before reaching the receiver. If an object interrupts the light beam, the sensor registers the reduced light intensity and activates the output.
With an energetic reflex light sensor, the transmitter and receiver are housed in a single enclosure. The transmitter emits a beam of light on to an object, where the object acts as a reflector and part of the light is reflected back to the sensor. The receiver detects this portion of reflected light, which activates the sensor as soon as a specific threshold has been reached.
