The Solder-Ex desoldering wick has been developed for the repair of solder joints. It consists of a copper wick and is coated with a special halogen-free flux, which accelerates solder absorption.
The Stannol Solder-Ex desoldering wick is placed on the solder to be removed. The wick is heated at the end with a soldering iron until the solder melts. The capillary action sucks the solder into the wick. Then the wick is removed and the solder-filled part is cut off. Sudden heat shock, such as that experienced in vacuum suction systems, is avoided because the wick is applied to the solder joint when cold.
